Volunteer Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How many days and hours do I have to volunteer?
A: Most committee volunteers should work at least 3-4 days over the course of the Championship, working a 4-6 hour shift, including at least one weekday shift.
Q: Can my children volunteer? Is there an age requirement?
A: Yes, children ages 13 to 17 years old as of July 1, 2012 can be a Junior Volunteer. Junior Volunteers may work on the following committees: Standard Bearers and Program Sales.
Q: What does the volunteer fee cover?
A: The $120.00 fee covers the uniform (one shirt, one jacket, a hat or visor), a commemorative pin, a volunteer party invitation, free parking in the volunteer parking area, credential for the week, and food and beverage during shifts. In addition, you will receive a onetime discount in the Championship Merchandise Pavilion. The Junior Volunteer fee of $50.00 includes the uniform (one shirt, one hat), a volunteer party invitation, free parking in the volunteer parking area (for those who have a valid driver’s license), credential for the week, food and beverage during shifts, and a onetime discount on Championship merchandise. One additional volunteer shirt for both adult and junior volunteers may be purchased for $20.00.
Q: If I am no longer able to volunteer, can I receive a refund?
A: Yes, you will be issued a refund if you cancel before April 1, 2012. Please contact the Championship Office at (248) 693-6736 to request a refund.
Q: Can I watch golf when I am not working?
A: Yes, your credential is valid for the entire week. On days that you are working as a volunteer, before or after your shift, you are welcome to watch golf as a spectator. Remember, with your volunteer credential you are able to bring kids 17 and under to the championship for FREE when you are not working.
Q: Can I take photographs or ask for autographs?
A: When you are not working (recommended: do not wear your volunteer uniform), you may use your camera during practice rounds (Monday - Wednesday) and ask for an autograph after the player's round.
Q: Can I be scheduled (shift assignments) at the same time as my spouse, friend, etc.?
A: We will make every effort to accommodate your scheduling requests. Make sure to list your request on your Shift Availability Form that will be made available January of 2012.
Q: What if I cannot attend the training session?
A: Please make every effort to attend training. If you are unable, your committee chairman will provide you with the necessary information, with the exception of Walking Scorers whose training is mandatory.
Q: How do I know my schedule? And when will I receive my schedule?
A: Your schedule will be emailed to you by your committee chair in March of 2012. Any changes or issues with your schedule will be made through the committee chair.
Q: What happens if it rains?
A: The Championship will go on and we will need your help. Make sure to report to your committee's check-in location 15-20 minutes prior to your shift, rain or shine.
Q: When will I receive my uniform?
A: Uniforms will be shipped directly to you approximately 6-8 weeks prior to the event.
Q: What do I do if my uniform does not fit?
A: We will offer multiple uniform exchange days prior to the Championship.
